Holiday Attire

The holidays are a time for celebration. There’s bound to be more family, food, and photos that any can plan for, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t plan out what you are going to wear. Style du Jour wants to help you have a fabulously festive holiday season, and what better place to start than your holiday attire?

Get Inspired

We all know that food tends to be at the center of most holiday gatherings, especially Thanksgiving. Se we say, don’t just take a hint from the lovely colors of fall, but even look to the dinner spread for fun color combinations. Find a cashmere sweater in a cranberry, eggplant, or even pumpkin color! And don’t forget all the vibrant colors of the changing leaves. When you match these colors with a neutral like brown, black, tan or gray, it creates an elegant and put together look inspired by autumn.

Comfort Food

Just because you plan on over indulging in mash potatoes and gravy, that doesn’t mean you have to wear a shapeless, oversized sweater and sweatpants. Along with the color, keep the fit of your clothes in mind as well. Whether you op for pants or a skirt, you want to make sure you are picture perfect before or after all that turkey. Try a nice wrap dress or top. This camouflages the midsection and is forgiving if in the right fabric. You are sure to look back at the pictures and smile, not cringe.

Cozy Up

Don’t forget your outerwear! Let your winter coat finish off your holiday looks instead of being an afterthought. This season, cropped jackets are in and can be found in a range of colors and fabrics. However, you can never go wrong with a classic peat coat or trench. Pay attention to the length of the coat on you, you don’t want it to be so overwhelming that it makes you look stumpy. Look for structure and quality so not only does it look amazing on you, but it can stand up to the harsh weather. The right jacket will leave a lasting impression whether you are coming or going.

Ho Ho NO!

After Thanksgiving, the hustle and bustle of shopping season can be overwhelming. So why not treat yourself to something special? And we don’t mean the tacky sweater with snowmen and Santa ironed onto the front. Find something that brings the holiday cheer but can be worn for multiple occasions. And remember, just because red and green seem to be the official colors of the holiday season, that doesn’t mean you have to dress like a Christmas tree. Try these alternatives:

  • Rich fabrics such as satin are elegant and are perfect for special occasions.
  • Details such as embroidery or beading will make you sparkle.
  • Try saturated jewel tones in other colors than red or green.
  • The right jewelry and accessories, especially in gold and silver, complete the look.

If you are set on red and green, try these tips to make sure you don’t get mistaken for one of Santa’s little helpers:

  • Use pops of red, instead of an all over look, like in a shoe or bag.
  • Choose deep jewel toned greens in rich fabrics.
  • Elude to the idea. Try not to wear either or both in an overwhelming and obvious way.

Go Out with a Bang!

The last event to consider is possibly the most fun, especially when it comes to planning what to wear. Of course we’re talking about the day that brings it all to an end; New Year’s Eve! And, ladies, for this special night there are only 3 letters you need to keep in mind – LBD. Yes, the Little Black Dress is perfect for a classy night out with friends and maybe even a special kiss at midnight. Ring in the New Year with a new look!
