Like the classic song says, "Summer time and the living is easy." However, that doesn’t necessarily include picking out what to wear. The days that span June through August bring many special events including graduations, Fourth of July BBQs, and bridal showers. There is one type of event that trumps all of the fore mentioned when it comes to picking out an outfit; a wedding. We have all been to weddings where someone has made a complete spectacle of themselves by wearing something inappropriate. Hey, maybe you were that person once. By asking yourself some key questions and following some classic guidelines, you should be dressed to impress this wedding season.
When is the wedding?
If it is a daytime wedding then choose fabrics that are light and comfortable. You want to avoid heavy fabrics like velvet or man made fabrics that don't breathe well. Also, if a dress isn't the choice for you, try separates. A cute top and mid-length skirt will do just fine. Pants are acceptable, but don't wear the tired black pants you wear to work all the time.
If the wedding takes place in the evening then the attire tends to be more formal. A longer dress or skirt can be worn if you’d rather. Also, try something with a little sparkle. A formal evening wedding is the only instance where it is fully acceptable to wear all black. Still, I would try an alternative like dark shades of blue, brown, or purple and don't forget to accessorize.
Will the ceremony and reception take place indoors or outdoors?
For an indoor wedding, try wearing something more structured or tailored. If you wear a strapless dress, bring along a shawl or light cover-up of some sort, you can always remove it for the reception.
For an outdoor wedding wear colors and prints that reflect the season. Be careful about wearing something so light weight that might get blown up in the wind. The good thing about summer weddings is that you don’t need to wear nylons! So try wearing an open toe shoe, with a pedicure of course!
It is common to have one inside and one outside, in this situation you should plan for both. If you do not know that location of either the wedding or reception, then plan for both.
